The Abundant Life Tabernacle, widely known as "Da Tab," was founded in 1995 by Bishop Tyrone G. Jefferson, Jr., along with twenty other individuals who shared his vision. The initial meeting, held at Bro. Cordell Chambliss' home, solidified the commitment of these founders, including key figures like the late Missionary Mildred Jefferson and Sis. Brenda King-Smith. Bishop Jefferson articulated a vision that he believed was divinely inspired, outlining the mission and future of what would become the Abundant Life Baptist Church. This vision resonated deeply with the founding members, setting the stage for the church's growth and impact. A week after this seminal meeting, the fledgling congregation began holding worship services at Sis. Brenda King-Smith's home. Rapid growth soon necessitated a move to a leased building at 1920 Franklin Ave., New Orleans. For four years, this location served as the church's home, but as the congregation continued to expand, it became clear that a larger, permanent facility was needed. This led to the purchase of a double house and an adjacent beauty salon at 1800 Arts Street. Bishop Jefferson transformed these properties into a worship facility and a fellowship hall, respectively. The church flourished in its new home, but in 2005, Hurricane Katrina devastated the area, destroying the church and displacing its members.
In the aftermath of Katrina, Bishop Jefferson received a divine message to "rebuild and recover." Obeying this call, he spearheaded the reconstruction of the Abundant Life Tabernacle. Slowly but surely, displaced members returned, and the church experienced unprecedented growth. To accommodate the increasing membership, Bishop Jefferson added another worship service and acquired additional property at 1701 Franklin Ave., which had previously served as a medical center and dialysis clinic. This new site featured expanded facilities, including administrative offices, a bookstore, and multiple rooms for various functions, enhancing the church's capacity to serve its congregation and community. By 2007, the Tabernacle's efforts to sustain and grow its mission were further bolstered by the purchase of another duplex, generating additional revenue. The church's impact extended beyond its immediate community through initiatives such as the Multi-Purpose Center, which feeds hundreds of people monthly. Internationally, the Tabernacle's mission efforts reached as far as Kenya and Keto, Ecuador, reflecting its commitment to global outreach. The ministry's continuous growth and its community-focused projects underscored its role as a beacon of hope and support.
The Abundant Life Tabernacle has become a transformative force, evident in the lives it touches and the souls it saves. The diverse range of ministries within the church addresses various aspects of human needs, from spiritual growth to practical assistance. As the church continues to thrive under God's guidance, it remains poised for even greater achievements. With unwavering faith and a clear vision, the Tabernacle looks forward to the future, confident that with God's blessing, the possibilities for growth and service are boundless.
